Hintergrund
ELK1 belongs to the EST transcription factor family. Proteins in the family have a unique DNA binding domain that binds to conserved DNA sequences. Phosphorylation of ELK1 at Serine 383 and 389 by mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) activates ELK1. The binding of ELK1 to target sequences is also regulated by its co-factor, serum response factor (SRF), by alternative splicing, and by SUMOylation. ELK1 regulates the transcription of c-fos and genes encoding cytoskeleton proteins, and was found to play a role in longterm memory formation, drug addiction and other neurological disorders.Synonyms: ETS domain-containing protein Elk-1, Elk-1
