Synonyms: Galectin-3, Gal-3, 35 kDa lectin, Carbohydrate-binding protein 35, CBP 35, Galactose-specific lectin 3, Galactoside-binding protein, GALBP, IgE-binding protein, L-31, Laminin-binding protein, Lectin L-29, Mac-2 antigen, LGALS3, MAC2
Tissue Specificity: A major expression is found in the colonic epithelium. It is also abundant in the activated macrophages. Expressed in fetal membranes.
Background: SAM domain and HD domain-containing protein 1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SAMHD1 gene. This gene may play a role in regulation of the innate immune response. The encoded protein is upregulated in response to viral infection and may be involved in mediation of tumor necrosis factor-alpha proinflammatory responses. Mutations in this gene have been associated with Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome.
