    Hintergrund

CD46, also known as membrane cofactor protein (MCP), was first described as a membrane complement regulator that fu nctions as a cofactor with factor I to cleave complement factors C3b and C4b and thereby protect the cell from co mplement attack. In humans, CD46 is expressed on all nuc leated cells. In the rodent animals, its expression is limited only in testis, indicating that the major function of CD46 among different species lies in fertilization. CD46 and other membrane complement regulatory proteins (CD55 and CD59) are frequently overexpressed on cancer cells, possibly as a mechanism for cancer cells to overcome lysis by complement. Several pathogens, including viruses and bacteria (measles virus, human herpesvirus 6, human group B and D adenoviruses, Streptococcus pyogenes , and pathogenic Neisseria species) have been reported to use CD46 for invasion. Recent evidence also indicates that CD 46 signaling events play an important role in linking innate and acquired immune function.Synonyms: MIC10, Membrane cofactor protein, TLX, Trophoblast leukocyte common antigen
