Hintergrund: Tamm-Horsfall Protein (THP) is a glycoprotein of approximately 80 kDa containing up to 25 % carbohydrate by weight. It exists as a high molecular weight polymer in urine and approximately 50 mg of the THP are excreted per day by adult humans. THP is produced by the epithelial cells lining the thick ascending loop of Henle and distal convoluted tubules of the kidney. THP is also the primary constituent of renal tubular casts and THP aggregation has been implicated as a factor in the pathogenesis of acute renal failure by causing tubular obstruction. Antibody to THP is present in the serum of patients with pyelonephritis and reflus uropathy.Synonyms: THP, Tamm-Horsfall urinary glycoprotein
