    Hintergrund

Chordin (also called Chd, Chrd) is a secreted glycoprotein that plays a central role in early embryonic development by antagonizing Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) signaling. In zebrafish (Danio rerio), Chordin is a key dorsalizing factor that helps establish the dorsoventral axis during gastrulation, contributing to proper tissue patterning and organogenesis.

Chordin functions by binding directly to BMP ligands (such as Bmp2 and Bmp4), preventing them from interacting with their receptors and thereby inhibiting BMP signaling activity in dorsal regions of the embryo. The zebrafish chordin gene is expressed in the organizer region (shield) during early development, and its activity is essential for the formation of dorsal structures such as the notochord, neural plate, and somites.

Loss-of-function mutations in chordin lead to ventralized phenotypes, while overexpression can result in dorsalization, underscoring its importance as a morphogen regulator. Due to its highly conserved function across vertebrates, zebrafish Chordin is widely used in studies of axis specification, morphogen gradients, neural induction, and BMP pathway modulation.
