Hintergrund
- Biglycan is an extracellular matrix proteoglycan that is closely related in structure to decorin and fibromodulin. Biglycan and decorin are thought to be the result of a gene duplication. Biglycan is expressed in secondary myotubes during fetal muscle formation. In adult muscle it is located in the endomysium and neuromuscular junctions, where it connects to the dystrophin-associated proteins through binding to a-dystroglycan. In developing newborn mice biglycan expression is initially high and then decreases during skeletal muscle differentiation and maturation. Biglycan may also have a role in the fibrotic process since it is overexpressed in atherosclerotic lesions and has been shown to cause an increase in thymidine incorporation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells.Synonyms: BGN, Bone/cartilage proteoglycan I, PG-S1, PGS1, SLRR1A, Small Leucine-rich Protein 1A
