SNAT1 acts as a sodium-dependent transporter of glutamine which serves as a precursor for the synaptic transmitter, glutamate. SNAT1 is expressed in brain, specifically at glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons, and also expressed in placenta, heart, lung, skeletal muscle, spleen, stomach and testis.
