Beschreibung: Alternative oxidase a respiratory enzyme, beside cytochrome oxidase, which is a part of electron transport chain found in plants, some fungi and protists. It is a second terminal oxidase and it acts by decreasing the efficiency of mitochondrial energy conservation. Several proton-pumping steps are bypassed in this alternative pathway and therefore activation of the oxidase reduces ATP generation. The potential energy of the system is lost as heat, and, in plants with high levels of the alternative oxidase, this results in thermogenesis.
