Hintergrund
- C. jejuni is a curved, rod-shaped gram negative bacterium which is a member of the Campylobacteraceae family. They are motile with a polar unsheathed flagellum that results in a corkscrew like motion. They occur primarily as commensals in humans and domestic animals, particularly in chickens where gut temperatures of 42 °C are optimal for growth. C. jejuni are one of the most common causes of human diarrhea in the world. Food poisoning can be severely debilitating, although rarely life-threatening as the disease is self limiting. Campylobacter infections are also associated with postinfectious complications including arthritis, Reiter syndrome and Guillain-Barre syndrome.
