Murata, Nishimura, Kuniyasu, Nakayama: Three-dimensional structure of the alpha1-beta complex in the skeletal muscle dihydropyridine receptor by single-particle electron microscopy. in Journal of electron microscopy 2010
the L-type Ca2+ channel function, but not the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ release triggering function of the skeletal muscle dihydropyridine receptor, is modulated by the gamma1 subunit
absence of alpha1S, beta1 or gamma1 DHPR subunits does not significantly affect the electrophysiological properties of T-type Ca2+ currents in skeletal muscle
Thus, we conclude that the alpha(2)delta(1) dihydropyridine receptor subunit is physiologically necessary for sustaining Ca(2+) transients in response to prolonged depolarization or repeated trains of action potentials.
Voltage-dependent calcium channels are composed of five subunits. The protein encoded by this gene represents one of these subunits, gamma, and is one of two known gamma subunit proteins. This particular gamma subunit is part of skeletal muscle 1,4-dihydropyridine-sensitive calcium channels and is an integral membrane protein that plays a role in excitation-contraction coupling. This gene is part of a functionally diverse eight-member protein subfamily of the PMP-22/EMP/MP20 family and is located in a cluster with two family members that function as transmembrane AMPA receptor regulatory proteins (TARPs).
