Beschreibung Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide hormone synthesized by the parafollicular cells ofthe thyroid. It causes a rapid, but short lived, reduction in serum calcium and phosphateby promoting the incorporation of those ions in the bones. This effect is opposite to that ofparathyroid hormone. Staining for calcitonin may be used for the identification of aspectrum of C cell proliferative abnormalities ranging from C cell hyperplasia to invasivetumors. Staining for calcitonin in medullary carcinoma of the thyroid produces a finegranular pattern in the cytoplasm. Amyloid deposits within the tumor may also exhibitvarying degrees of calcitonin activity.
Spezifität Histochemical demonstration of calcitonin is important in the diagnosis of medullarycarcinoma of the thyroid and of C-cell hyperplasia. It may also occur in bronchialcarcinoids, in tumors of adrenal medulla and of pancreatic islets. Absorption with 10-100µg calcitonin per ml diluted antiserum abolishes the staining. A cytoplasmic staining isobserved. Species: Human, Rat. Others not tested.

Applikationshinweise Immunohistochemistry on frozen and paraffin sections: 1/500 – 1/800 using PAP, withovernight incubation at 2-8°COther applications not tested. Optimal dilutions are dependent on conditions and should be determined by the user.
