|
Alpha 1 Fetoprotein is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and the liverduring fetal life. Alpha fetoprotein expression in adults is often associated with hepatomaor teratoma. However, hereditary persistance of alpha-fetoprotein may also be found inindividuals with no obvious pathology. The protein is thought to be the fetal counterpartof serum albumin, and the alpha fetoprotein and albumin genes are present in tandem inthe same transcriptional orientation on chromosome 4. Alpha fetoprotein is found inmonomeric as well as dimeric and trimeric forms, and binds copper, nickel, fatty acidsand bilirubin. The level of alpha fetoprotein in amniotic fluid is used to measure renalloss of protein to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly. Expression has beendocumented in human adrenal, liver, ovary, testis, and pancreas. ESTs have beenisolated from normal human brain, liver/spleen, embryo and uterus tissue libraries. Alternate Names: anti-FETA antibody, anti-HPAFP antibody.

The antibody reacts with human alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP), an oncofetal antigen of 70kDa. AFP is a major fetal plasma protein, but is not present in healthy adult tissues.Elevated AFP concentrations in adult plasma may be an early marker of hepatocellularcarcinoma or teratoblastoma, while high concentrations in amniotic fluid may indicatesevere congenital defects of a fetus. Species Reactivity: Cross-reacts with Human. Not yet tested in other species. Localization: Secreted.
