Beschreibung
|
Alpha crystallins are major proteins of the ocular lens and are thought to play a role inmaintaining lens transparency. They are composed of two gene products alpha A andalpha B, for acidic and basic, respectively. Alpha-crystallins can be induced by heatshock and are members of the small heat shock protein (sHSP) family. They act asmolecular chaperones and hold unfolded or misfolded proteins in large, water-solublelow molecular weight aggregates. These heterogeneous aggregates consist of 30-40subunits of alpha crystallins, and the alpha A and alpha B subunits have a 3:1 ratio,respectively. Two additional functions of alpha crystallins are an autokinase activity andthe participation in the intracellular architecture.
