Beschreibung: Bacteroides fragilis is a gram-negative rod shaped bacterium. It is an obligate anaerobeand constitutes a large component (1% to 2%) of the normal colonic bacterial microflorain humans. It is an opportunistic pathogen with the potential to severely limit the successof gastro-intestinal surgery, and is frequently associated with extraintestinal infectionssuch as abscesses and soft tissue infections, as well as diarrheal diseases in animalsand humans. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is an integral component of the outer membrane(OM) of gram-negative bacteria. The LPS of B.fragilis substantially differs from that ofother gram-negative bacteria, since it lacks 2-keto-3-deoxyoctulosonic acid andL-glycero-D-mannoheptose. The lipid A of B.fragilis does not contain 3-hydroxymyristicacid, a major fatty acid in aerobic gram-negative bacteria.

Spezifität: In a simple ELISA this antibody is reactive with Bacteroides spp. Reactivities with otherorganisms have not yet been determined. Species Reactivity: Bacteria.
