Beschreibung: Eukaryotic cells contain an abundant nuclear protein, Ku, which was initially discoveredas an autoantigen. Ku is a heterodimer of 70 and 80 kDa subunits which binds to DNAends and other alterations in double-stranded DNA including hairpins, nicks and gaps.Ku plays a role in DNA repair as an essential subunit of DNA-dependent protein kinase(DNA-PK) that phosphorylates certain transcription factors (Sp1, Oct-1 and p53). Kutargets DNA-PK to DNA. The Ku/DNA-PK complex might provide a structural frameworkfor holding broken chromosomes together during repair. Ku plays a role in many diverseprocesses including cell signaling, proliferation, DNA repair, replication, transcriptionalactivation and apoptosis (2-4).
