    Hintergrund
ATM (ataxia telangiectasia mutated) encodes a 350-370 kDa protein. The ATM protein belongs to a family of protein kinases that appear to be involved in cell cycle control and DNA damage response. ATM kinase activity is enhanced immediately after exposure of cells to DNA double strand breaks. The C-terminal region of the protein has extensive homology to the catalytic domain of PI-3 (phosphatydilinositol-3) kinase, FAT (FRAP/ATM/TRAPP), and FAT-C (FAT-carboxy-terminal). ATM activates p53, increasing p21Cip1 levels, thus blocking activation of cdk2. That results in blockage of the G1/S transition.Synonyms: A-T mutated, ATDC, Ataxia telangiectasia mutated, Serine-protein kinase ATM, TEL1, TELO1
